Abstract
This dissertation is a critical edition of and critical commentary on a fifteenth-century manuscript currently housed at Oxford University. Bodleian Library, MS Douce 114 (SC# 21688) is in Middle English and contains three important narratives about Continental women mystics and beguines: Elizabeth of Spalbeek (d. 1266), written by Philip of Clairvaux (1150---1224); Christina mirabilis (d. 1224), written by Thomas of Cantimpre (1201--1270); and Marie d'Oignies (d. 1215), written by Jacques de Vitry (c. 1165--1224). The introduction covers the manuscript's provenance and transmission, medieval women's devotional practices in the Middle Ages, and an overview of the beguine movement. There is a chapter on each of the three women represented in the Douce manuscript, examining how they are portrayed in their respective vitae and what messages might have been encoded for their intended audiences. The edition is emended, footnoted, and glossed in order to be accessible to the modern reader.
