Abstract
This dissertation studies the music of Louise Talma (1906--96) and analyzes and describes the stylistic differences and the structural similarities that occur throughout Talma's compositional output. Despite the apparent stylistic diversity in Talma's compositions throughout her compositional life, there is a consistent use of various structural elements that characterizes most of her music. These musical concerns emanate in part from her early training with Nadia Boulanger. Toward this end, I examine in detail six of Talma's chamber and vocal compositions. The six key works serve as models to define and demonstrate the salient features of each of Talma's style periods and her unifying structural elements. Grouped in pairs, each pair represents one of Talma's three major periods: (1) Neo-Classical (1939--53); (2) Serial (1954--72); (3) Atonal (1973--96). The study of each style period is supplemented with numerous analyses of other compositions from Talma's output for which the six key compositions examined provide a basis for comparison.;This dissertation also includes the most comprehensive "Work's List," and Discography on Talma. A "Chronological Biography" provides extensive information about Talma regarding dates of her compositions, publications, awards, and teaching positions. A telephone interview that I conducted with Talma is also included and will give the reader further insight into the composer and her works. This study exposes Talma as an important twentieth-century composer not only because of the musical influences of Nadia Boulanger and Igor Stravinsky, but because her music is strikingly creative and innovative. Thus far, she has received little scholarly attention although she has contributed much valuable music to the twentieth century.
