Abstract
-
The determination of the domain of any given phenomenon is one of the most central issues in linguistics. In syntax, this issue has figured prominently in the development in recent years of a single theory which will account for both movement operations and anaphoric relations. It is crucial that this theory be both simple and not dependent upon a great number of language-specific parameters. Recent work has proposed a great variety of categories which serve as opaque domains for various syntactic relationships, and the movement seems to be in the direction of increasing complexity conditions which effect opacity. The present work suggests that categories are inherently open, and that the single parameter of argument status determines opacity. For phenomena involving only the level of Logical Form, a single unconditioned parameter should suffice. For phenomena restricted to the level of S-Structure, argument status interacts with other language-specific parameters to produce variation.
