Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the literary corpus of the "Palermo Generation," a.k.a. "The Generation of the Fifties in Peru", within the scope of contemporary Peruvian narrative. The members of this generation are Enrique Congrains Martin, Oswaldo Reynoso, Julio Ramon Ribeyro, Sebastian Salazar Bondy and Carlos Eduardo Zavaleta.;The narrative of "Palermo" characterizes itself by its thematic and stylistic homogeneity. Its theme and principal geographical setting is the city of Lima. The work of the "Palermo Generation" has been studied in this dissertation from a different point of view than that which has been the norm in the field of Peruvian literary criticism. This approach attempts to show that the narrative of these writers, both in the short story and in the novel, is structured according to certain ethnographical criteria.;During the formative years of this generation, the city and its inhabitants became the main socio-cultural problem of Peru. The young writers perceive and portray in their works the social and cultural change of the Peruvian people. The Palermists, influenced by the writings of Jose Maria Arguedas, adopt the ethnographical methods normally used to observe and to understand remote peoples and their culture. They apply this methodology to the marginal social sectors that create subcultures within the city. The political and economical climate of Peru from 1945 to 1965 is also studied in order to understand its impact on the narrators of "Palermo".;This leads us to the theme of the metamorphoses of Lima: its transformation from a "City of Kings" into a city of degraded human beings. In order to present this change we situate the writers and their works within a specific ideological, economical, political, artistic and philosophical context. We also study the special use of certain narrative techniques and the heteroglossia in the discourse of the "Palermo" writers.;In conclusion, this dissertation shows according to sociological and ethnographical criteria an ideologically charged narrative that presupposes a social end. It is a transitional narrative, an embryo of the present Peruvian novel.
