Abstract
-
This study will determine the relationship between the theory and the praxis of the short novel of the XVII century. It will evaluate a canon of precepts according to its function in the artistic discourse.;It has been divided in two sections. The First Part deals with the theory in general of the short novel as well as with one of the first normative treatises on the subject, the one that heads the collection of novels, Teatro popular by Francisco de Lugo y Davila. Since this author composed not only a literary theorization but also a pragmatic exposition, the Second Part relates both structures in view of their possible adaptation. The narrative system that formed the novelistic model is defined and the relation analyzed by applying the theory to his novels.;The novel, forgotten by the critics of its time, needed an apology and Lugo created one based on the composition of a theory that it was a conjugation of classical dictates, medieval traditions and renaissance theoretic reevalutions. He proposed the combination of theory and praxis according to the traditional norms, the aesthetical canons of writing and the critical manifestations, as well as a new semantic and methodological code for it, all of which are studied in this investigation.;The theoretical and practical antecedents of the novel and its consequences in the development of the novelistic prose of the XVII century are included, as there are also the association of the novel to other disciplines, the application of the Aristotelian poetic rules to prose in view of its conceptualization as a modality of poetry, and the different narrative approaches and techniques which allowed the author to establish its literary values.;In effect, it is the purpose of this thesis to identify the possible fusion between theory and praxis and all the elements that conformed the creation of the short novel of the XVII century.
