Abstract
There is not a great volume of literature covering the life and work of Jerry Rojo. He has been mentioned in publications on contemporary scene design and his work has been discussed in articles in scholarly journals; however, there is not a single book which chronicles his unique contribution to American scene design.;Since there is little written material on this subject, most data results from personal interviews with directors and theatre people who worked with Rojo. Brooks McNamara, Robert MacDonald, Andre Gregory, Leo Shapiro, Richard Schechner and Joseph Chaikin offered personal reflections on their working relationships with him. The designer's unpublished writings are also included in the study.;Extensive interviews with Rojo himself provided a reservoir of information, and three years of personal experience, working with him, facilitated the completion of this dissertation.;This evaluation of the work of a groundbreaking contemporary American environmental designer contains an overview of the times and career of Rojo, his important productions, awards and distinctions. Chapters 2 and 3 discuss Rojo's early years, his beginnings as a university professor, his return to graduate school and the subsequent, initial meeting with Richard Schechner which resulted in their work on Victims on Duty. Chapter 4 is devoted to Dionysus in '69, probably their most significant collaboration. Chapter 5 through 7 focus on Rojo's designs for Makbeth and other Performance Group plays, his designs for Andre Gregory's rendition of Beckett's Endgame at the Manhattan Project, and Section 10's production of The Great Hoss Pistol. Chapter 8 examines Rojo's work with director Leo Shapiro; Chapter 9 analyzes his design for the recent Public Theatre production of Vaclav Havel's Temptation. Chapter 10 deals with construction of Rojo's first permanent Environmental theatre. Chapters 11 and 12 examine Rojo as a consultant in theatre architecture and design, and his further activities and academia. A concluding evaluation comprises Chapter 13. Appendices include personal reflections based on years of work with Rojo as student, workshop participant and assistant director; a chronology of Rojo's work.
