Abstract
-
The purpose of the research was to evaluate the effect of father absence on the personality development of adolescent females aged 14-18, and the adaptation of their mother to divorce/death of the spouse. In addition, the study was designed to integrate the psychosociological concepts of boundary ambiguity and closure in relationship to the preservation of the father image, its effect on overall family functioning and the relationships of daughters to the mothers.;A questionnaire developed by the author was utilized with three groups of mothers and their daughters from: (1) intact families, mother/father present; (2) widowed families; (3) divorced families. Several scale subcategories from the questionnaire were generated by grouping specific questions to assess the mothers and their daughters on a variety of factors of personality and psychosocial interaction. The results indicated that there were significant differences between the groups and that those were most marked between mothers and daughters from intact families compared to mothers and daughters from the other two groups.
