Abstract
-
Schoenocaulon, an archaic genus of lilies which grow primarily in Mexico, is revised herein. In this treatment, which differs substantially from the monograph by Brinker (1942), 24 species and three varieties are recognized. Morphological and field studies have provided the foundation for the taxonomic treatment. Supplemental information concerning the biology of the genus is documented in the chapters on chemistry, morphology, cytology, and ethnobotany. The chapter on evolution discusses factors bearing on evolution within Schoenocaulon, and the major evolutionary trends as they relate both to the genus and to the family.
