Abstract
Two studies examined the attribution of responsibility for dental health care from the dual perspectives of the elderly and the dentist. Four models of attribution (i.e., moral, enlightenment, compensatory and medical) were assessed with the Dental Orientation Scale. Study 1 examined attribution of responsibility for a sample of 100 "new" and "old" elderly members of senior centers and a control group of 100 younger college students.;Major results indicated that: (1) contrary to expectations, preference for the medical model over the other models was not demonstrated; and (2) as predicted, medical model endorsement was greater for the elderly than the young and for the "old" elderly than the "new" elderly. Study 2 examined the attribution of responsibility for dental health care for the "new" elderly, "old" elderly and the young by 100 dentists attending a dental society meeting. Results indicated that: (1) contrary to expectations, preference of the medical model compared to the other models was not demonstrated for the elderly groups; and (2) as predicted, medical model endorsement was greater for the "new" and "old" elderly compared to the young group.;Meaningful interpretation of the results was limited due to inadequacies of the Dental Orientation Scale. Redevelopment of the Scale was recommended for future research.
