Abstract
-
Around 1450, Arnoul Greban wrote Le mystere de la Passion, an enormously successful Passion play performed in France throughout the next century. Its 35,000 lines of octosyllabic verse recount the life of Christ until the Resurrection though some material from the Old Testament is included. The play's dramatic center, a division called The Third Day, focuses on the trial of Christ and the Crucifixion. I have translated and annotated this section of roughly 7,000 lines. I have also provided a summary of the entire play. In the introduction to the dissertation, I discuss manuscripts, sources, influence, staging, and Greban's dramatic and theological interests as seen in his portrayal of Mary, Pilate, the Pharisees, the torturers, and the devils.
