Abstract
This study is exploratory and descriptive. A "broad net" strategy was employed to secure both quantitative and qualitative data. The study examined the attitudes, broadly defined of a select group of Black and Hispanic seniors toward each other. The quality of their intergroup relations in New York City and senior centers were explored.;The sample consisted of 20 Black and 28 Hispanic seniors, 55 to 92 years of age. There was ethnic/racial matching of interviewees and interviewers, who conducted in-depth interviews. Excerpts from interviews are reported on in great detail.;Examined as areas related to intergroup relations were the following: identity, discrimination, upbringing, language, resources, senior center participation, etc. Some of the questions asked included whether the respondents thought Blacks and Hispanics discriminated against each other, and if they themselves discriminated or had experienced discrimination from the other group. They were also asked to describe how Blacks and Hispanics got along in New York City and senior centers, as well as how different or similar Blacks and Hispanics were from each other.;Qualitative differences were found between Blacks and Hispanics in their level of identification with "American" society, as well as in how the Black and Hispanic elderly perceived each other and the quality of their intergroup relations. Both groups assessed there to be problems, but they felt, nevertheless, the groups got along better with each other than with Whites. Language and resources were found to be important variables entering into the quality of Black and Hispanic intergroup relations.;Suggestions are made for further research and for improvement of intergroup relations in senior centers.
