Abstract
-
The XV century was a turbulent, decisive, and interesting period in Spanish history. It suffered from the economic and population disasters of the XIV century and witnessed numerous changes in social, political, and religious life. Spain's relation with Italy promoted and reinforced the study of the classics and the development of historical works. This interest in history, in particular national history, developed further during the XVI century when the adventure of America gave historians an unlimited narrative source.;The historian Alfonso de Palencia (1423-1492) was an important literary figure of this century. Educated in Castile in the house of Bishop Alonso de Cartagena and in Italy in that of Cardinal Bessarion, he is probably the best representative of the new type of humanist scholar and politician that was to appear in the second half of the century, and perhaps the only Spanish exponent of what is called "civic humanism". These humanists were characterized by their consciousness of a new era, their desire to explain the present in relation to a reconsidered past, and their wish to improve society by applying the lessons of ancient Greece and Rome. Palencia's life and literature embodied this ideal in his determination to promote a better government and change the intellectual and social life of his contemporaries.;This study analyzes Palencia's intellectual works in the historical, political, and cultural framework of his time, and as part of the line of humanistic thought of the XV century. It considers Palencia's historical methods in relation to the humanistic approach to history, and also presents an historical work attributed to him, the Relacion verdadera.
