Abstract
-
This work investigates the inscription of women subjects into hegemonic ideology through the discourses of literary criticism and 20 century realist fiction. A feminist, post-structural theoretical framework is developed and then applied in a critical reading of Sanctuary and Requiem for a Nun by William Faulkner. The construction of the theoretical framework is accomplished through a series of reversals: that of literary criticism by sociology, of sociology by feminism, of feminist cultural analysis by a women's reading that is ideologically critical, and by the reversal of heterosexual, deconstructive difference through the insertion of the lesbian continuum. The method of reading formulated and applied exposes the power of the patriarchal narrative's influence on consciousness through the delineation of the phallocentric gaze as its framing device. The woman reader is encouraged to catch herself looking in order to resist the text's intention to instill terror of Her-Self.
