Abstract
Esteban Echeverria formulated an aesthetic program subordinated to an ideologic program, and coherently his work was realized within this objective. As all his epoch and the other one before, the collective ideals prevail over the literary works and it could hardly elude such historical imposition. Precisely, the only possibility to realize a literary work was then the acceptance of this sign. And time showed that Echeverria was right because those who persisted in a decrepit pseudo-classicism already disconnected from the new ideals in progress, disappeared in frustration, and today we do not remember them.;However, the name of Esteban Echeverria remains as an unique figure, as a founder; in other words, somebody with whom we can agree or disagree, but of whom we can not prescind.;Echeverria's work and action configured one of the decisive moments of Argentinean culture. This was a moment of transition in which the new conceptions, through Echeverria's action, produced total changes of physiognomy.;This occurred in the literary area because of three fundamental reasons: (a) he introduced European romanticism in the Argentinean literature, (b) he inaugurated national literature, and (c) he initiated a critical and realistic narrative form.;In the area of ideas his contribution is not less important: (a) he is the founder of a new tendency, the humanistic liberalism, and (b) he is the master of the brilliant Argentinean generation that founded "las bases" of the Argentine Republic.;This influence is developed by Echeverria through his literary production, as a poet and writer; through his social and political writings; through his intellectual leadership and his capacity as an organizer.;My investigation has attempted to recover the figure of Echeverria through an analysis centralized in his work as a poet, thinker and politician as one unit, because no facet can be studied separate from the others.;My objective has been to study Echeverria's work having taken into account the European sources and the ideological lexicon used by the author in order to formulate a literary and political national project.
