Abstract: This dissertation was written to complement a recorded archive of the music of the Jillala brotherhood of Tangier, Morocco, available at the Ethnomusicology Department of the Graduate School and University Center of The City University of New York. The paper is in two parts: an introduction giving the historical and ethnological background of the Jillala brotherhood in Morocco as well as a description of the recording process, and an account of the music itself. The paper includes transcriptions, illustrations, and an appendix listing the contents of the tape archive.
