Abstract
-
This study was undertaken to determine whether social workers in NASW were vigorously participating in political activities; and if so, the extent and nature of this activity. The need for a training program to assist social workers to engage in legislative/political activity was assessed and two pilot training programs were designed, implemented, and tested.;A study of relevant research and a needs assessment survey supported the proposition that social workers' participation in legislative/political activity through NASW has increased in recent years, and pilot educational/training programs demonstrated the value of education and training for this form of political activity.;Components of the training program were implemented in 1988 at a legislative/political conference of the New York State Chapter of NASW and a seminar at the School of Social Welfare, State University of New York at Albany from 1987 to 1988 on the public policy process and methods of intervention in this process.;A formative evaluation of both components of the educational/training program indicated that the goal of developing an educational/training program for helping social workers interested in political practice was achieved.;Assessment of the educational/training programs' impact on participants indicated that many planned to pursue their legislative/political interests, that the programs were helpful, and that they would like to learn more in this field.;The educational/training experience and evaluation findings suggest that schools of social work and/or NASW might profitably offer similar programs to social work students and professional social workers alike.;This project delineated the nature and extent of legislative/political participation of social workers and developed an educational/training program that helped the workers to learn about the political process and ways to effectively intervene in the process in an attempt to further the goals of the profession.
