Abstract
-
Through the analysis of the relevant manuscripts and sketch materials, this study seeks to shed light on the creative and compositional process of the composer Bela Bartok. A short first chapter presents the history and genesis of the piece. Chapter 2 discusses the organization of the manuscripts and other available materials. Form is discussed in passing in chapter 3, but the emphasis is on semantic interrelationships between the outer movements. Chapter 4, which is the main focus of the study, concentrates on the different layers of local corrections, which typically involve only a few measures, and the continuity corrections that involve whole sections.
