Abstract
This work examines and analyzes feminist ethical discourse in the Roman Catholic Church as it has been developed (and continues to be developed) by an emergent group of women ethicists and activists within the church. This discourse may be understood as a discourse of resistance. As such we must understand it in relation to the official church discourse. It is also important to understand these two discourses in terms of their context, particularly the interconnections between the ideology of the Roman Catholic Church, its sexual ethical discourse and its institutional structure and practices, and how these have been mutually constructed over time.;This institution is part of a larger social context. Structural hierarchy, mandatory celibacy for priests, and an anti-sexual, anti-woman ideology intersect to maintain an oppressive authoritarian institution which has had, and continues to have, serious implications not only for members of the Roman Catholic Church but for society as a whole. In light of the Church's power in society, especially its power over women's lives, it behooves us to study a movement by women that radically challenges the church from within.;Roman Catholic feminist ethical discourse, organized around issues of gender and sexuality also has implications for the sociology of sexuality and for the new but growing sociology of ethics. Important contributions to feminist theory and the social construction of gender also form an important part of feminist ethical discourse. Feminist ethicists are also crucial to the social movement called Women-Church. A feminist organization, Women-Church serves not only as a support system for Roman Catholic feminists but provides an example of the on-going development of the contemporary feminist movement.
