Abstract
This is a study of seven works by major romantic poets in England and France each of whom retell the story of Cain, each presenting him as a sympathetic figure. The works are: (1) Cain: A Mystery by Lord Byron; (2) "The Wanderings of Cain" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge; (3) The Ghost of Abel by William Blake; (4) Histoire de la reine du matin et de Soliman prince des genies by Gerard de Nerval; (5) "La conscience" by Victor Hugo; (6) "Abel et Cain" by Charles Baudelaire; (7) Qain by Charles-Rene Marie Leconte de Lisle.;I trace these portraits of Cain back to their sources in the text of the Hebrew Bible, and through their evolution in esoteric traditions of biblical exegesis. I also connect each version to the author's religious and political concerns, especially the author's view of the French Revolution. This study casts light role of the Bible in the growth of romanticism, and the different meaning of romanticism in England and France.
