Abstract
This study attempts to account for Schubert's irregular recapitulatory practice--particularly his non-tonic recapitulations--in the context of the stylistic changes that occurred in his oeuvre from 1810 to 1828, and to demonstrate by means of analysis how Schubert's novel conceptions of recapitulation brought about significant alteration of the form. His most progressive conception, "continuous tonal motion," is revealed in those movements with non-tonic recapitulation that are structured on a single uninterrupted harmonic progression. In these works conventional sonata construction is replaced by a unitary type of form.;The first chapter surveys that portion of the pre-Schubertian repertoire which may have influenced Schubert. The four main chapters, II through V, examine Schubert's recapitulatory procedure in sonata-form movements in various genres from his early to his final years. The last two chapters, VI and VII, are supplementary, the former surveying some unusual key relationships, the latter describing Schubert's particular treatment of the dominant.
