This thesis presents a study and edition of one of the most important Iberian manuscripts of polyphony from the early sixteenth century with repertory of sacred and secular vocal music by the most eminent Spanish and Franco-Flemish composers of the time.;The examination of the compilation process--in Chapters I and II--offers radically new hypotheses about the composite character and the date and place of origin of Barcelona M.454; Chapter III is a detailed inventory of the manuscript. Chapters IV and V attempt to establish the place of Barcelona M.454 within the context of concordant Iberian manuscripts, first through a critical review of the diverse and often contradictory hypotheses about their origins (Chapter IV), and then through a comparison of the readings that they transmit for the pieces that they share with Barcelona M.454 (Chapter V). Among the Iberian manuscripts, the following receive particular attention: Barcelona, Orfeo Catala 5; Barcelona, Biblioteca de Catalunya, M. 681; Madrid, biblioteca Real, MS 1335, "Cancionero Musical de Palacio;" Segovia, Archivo de la Catedral, s.s.; Seville, Biblioteca Colombina, 5-5-20; and Tarazona, Archivo Capitular de la Catedral, MSS 2 and 3. Chapter VI analyzes stemmatic relationships between Barcelona M.454 and a number of Continental manuscripts; this chapter also reassesses the often-questioned reliability of Barcelona M.454.;The present study suggests that Barcelona M.454, which stands with Segovia as the richest Iberian sources of Franco-Flemish repertoire from the early sixteenth century, reflects the diverse musical influences that flowed through Barcelona. Circumstantial evidence connects the manuscript with the noble Cardona family of that city, a family that occupied the highest ecclesiastical and military positions in the Crown of Aragon, and may have served as important music patrons in Barcelona at that time.;Volume II presents a modern edition of about hundred works (Masses, motets, Magnificats, hymns, psalms, a passion, and a group of Spanish secular works) most of them unique to this manuscript. The composers represented are: Aldomar, Anchieta, Baena, Benito? (possibly Brumel), Cubells, Encina, Fevin, Flecha, Gabriel, Mondejar, Mouton, Martini, Morales, Pastrana, Penalosa, Quexada, Ribaflecha, Torre, Weerbecke, and Ylario.
