Abstract
-
Brian Moore, John McGahern and Aidan Higgins belong to a group of Irish fiction writers, which also includes Edna O'Brien and William Trevor, which emerged in the decade 1955-1965, and which has produced a body of work that is different from anything previously found in the field. At a point when the novel and short story had developed what Francis Stuart has called a "soft center", Moore and his contemporaries, by combing the best of Modernism with the best of the Revival and post-Revival periods, produced a livelier mode of writing, one which was more in tune with the psychological realities of Irish life, and with the type of fiction being written in other parts of the English-speaking world. While Irish fiction was changing, similar changes were taking place in the other arts, from painting to poetry to music, and also in Irish society in general. Likewise, Irish government policy was undergoing an important transformation: political leaders abandoned many of the isolationist sacred cows they had inherited from the nationalist tradition, and sought to make Ireland a part of Europe again.;The contribution that this trio has made to Irish fiction has been impressive and varied. They are the first male Irish writers since Joyce who have been able to write successfully about the lives of women, and the first Irish writers to have made extensive use of the experiences of Irish people living outside Ireland. Nevertheless, whether they are writing about Ireland or the world beyond it, Moore, McGahern and Higgins explore lives and landscapes in detail, with honesty, and with a careful respect for the possibilities and limits of language.
