Abstract
A retrospective chart review of 100 cases (50 single-episode and 50 multiple-episode cases) seen by a mobile psychiatric emergency service was conducted to determine which first-visit clinical characteristics distinguished repeated users of the service from those seen only once. Since earlier studies have suggested that heavy users of emergency services resemble what has been described as the new young chronic population, it was hypothesized that a lower overall level of functioning (as measured by the Global Assessment Scale), substance abuse, and/or the presence of psychotic or suicidal symptoms would be significant predictors of repeated episodes of treatment.;Only the presence of psychotic symptoms at initial presentation significantly distinguished the repeat-episode from the single-episode group and made a significant contribution to the prediction of repeater status. Contrary to expectation, the repeated users did not appear to resemble the young chronic population.
