Abstract
Bulk and solution polymerizations of p- ( (2-(2-oxazoline-2-yl)propyl) thio) phenol (I) and m- ( (2-(2-oxazoline-2-yl)propyl) thio) benzenethiol (II) were studied. (DIAGRAM, TABLE OR GRAPHIC OMITTED...PLEASE SEE DAI)Polymerization of I occurred in the temperature range of 100-200{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C and gave polymers with two different repeat units and low molecular weight (M{dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm n{rcub}{dollar} 1,000-3,000). Polymerization of II was studied over the temperature range of {dollar}-27{dollar} to 150{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C and gave polymers with one repeat unit and M{dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm n{rcub}{dollar} as high as 21,000. Polymerization mechanisms were proposed based on {dollar}\sp1{dollar}H and {dollar}\sp{13}{dollar}C NMR results on the chemical structure and end-groups of the polymers.
