Abstract
-
The overall concern of this project is group work education and practice in the social work profession. It focuses on the field education experience of graduate school of social work students, with the Hunter College School of Social Work as the primary study environment. The project linked the field practicum assignments of students and the skills of field instructors, with the other educative activities of the school and the field placement agency.;The centerpiece of this holistic evaluation project was a training intervention with beginning field instructors, focusing on the enhancement of their planning and field supervision of group work assignments. A full report of the successful training curriculum and evaluation is provided. Building on previous research, the project suggests methods for expanding the study of group work in field work education on a large-scale basis.;Literature reviews discuss the history of social group work practice and education, and distinctive aspects of social work with groups. The qualitative and quantitative studies reported in this document were found to support the development and evaluation of the training intervention and provide a description of the School's view of group work in field education. The project provides a useful training model and points to additional activities to address the critical loss of group work content in social work education on a national level.
