Abstract
This study looked at student and field instructor satisfaction with full and part time field advisors/liaisons in social work education. Students and field instructors were surveyed in May of 1991 and again in May of 1992. The results showed no significant difference in their satisfaction with either full or part time field advisors/liaisons. The study also repeated other findings: (1) field instructors are usually more satisfied with field advising/liaison work than are students, and (2) students were unclear as to the role of the field advisor/liaison in their social work education.;The study also reviewed the literature to date on field advising/liaison activities with particular attention to the role and functions as well as the personnel who fill the role. Specific issues for full time faculty performing as field advisors/liaisons were identified.;Finally, the study articulated the parallel between the role of the field advisor/liaison and the social work role of the case manager. The overlap of the tasks performed by each was identified. Because of this, the study argues that an assessment be made of each student field work situation and either (1) the assignment of a generalist field advisor/liaison employing, as needed, some or all of the activities on a menu of those possible, or (2) the assignment of a specific advisor/liaison who has the necessary specialized expertise to deal with a particular situation.
