Abstract
-
The impact of the family on the choice of the Catholic priesthood in India and in the United States is examined using the interview method. Twenty priests and their forty parents from India and twenty priests and their parents from the United States are the subjects of this investigation.;The socio-economic conditions of the families of the Indian priests were lower, the family size was larger, the sons' educational opportunities were dim, the chance of getting a job was unlikely and the boys were younger when they decided to choose priesthood, compared to the respective conditions of the priests in the United States. These situations had some impact on the Indian priests' choice of the priesthood. On the other hand, they had not much influence on the American priests.;Both the Indian and American parents were highly religious and their priest-sons believe that the religious life of their parents was very helpful in choosing the priesthood. However, the religiosity of the Indian parents, according to the index we have set, was slightly higher than that of their counterparts in the United States.;The socio-economic conditions and the religiosity of the Indian parents had a greater impact on their son's choice of the priesthood more than that of the American parents on their son's choice of the priesthood.
