Abstract
-
The libretto of the chamber opera "Love and Friendship" is based on the juvenilia of Jane Austen--burlesques filled with manic energy and occasionally cruel wit. These stories present characters that work both as simple caricatures of Eighteenth-Century literary convention and as monsters of self-indulgence and deluded rationalization.;As an analogy to the psychotically sentimental universe of Laura, Edward, Sophia, and Augustus, the music operates both as a distortion of tonality and as a self-contained system. Most of the musical structure is generated by sonorities that can be classified under the normal forms (0167), (0347), and (0134679T).;"Love and Friendship" consists of nine sections (Overture, Prologue, Scenes 1-6, and Epilogue) and is scored for SATB quartet, two oboes, two bassoons, guitar, and piano. Its duration is approximately 65 minutes.
