Abstract
-
Today the original intention and understanding of the term Neue Sachlichkeit is lost. The slogan was coined in 1923 as a designation for the Post-Expressionist figurative art that had developed throughout Germany since the failed revolution of 1919, an art that had evolved out of, or in reaction to Expressionism. Although the term was coined during the period of hyper-inflation, it became a popular slogan only with the Neue Sachlichkeit exhibition that traveled throughout Germany during 1925-26--that is, after the German economy had been stabilized. The term then took on a life of its own going far beyond the intentions of Gustav F. Hartlaub, its originator. The phrases Sachlichkeit and Neue Sachlichkeit came to designate a new public attitude in Weimar Germany during this period of economic and political stabilization (1924-28). Within a few years after its introduction the slogan stood for an all-business attitude, which the Germans had perceived as being intrinsically American.;In the history of art the term has since been applied to the plethora of naturalistic styles that appeared during the Weimar Republic, primarily between 1925 and 1933.;However, through a historical study of both the development of figurative Post-Expressionism and the contemporary criticism, the historical inaccuracy regarding the term Neue Sachlichkeit becomes evident. A figurative, somewhat naturalistic, Post-Expressionism was fully developed and acknowledged in Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Munich, Karlsruhe and other cities by the autumn of 1923, the point of Germany's total economic collapse. In the spring of 1923 Hartlaub began preparing for an autumn exhibition of the new art which he labeled Die neue Sachlichkeit. The economic situation, however, rendered such plans impossible until 1925, i.e. during the stabilization.
