Abstract
The newspaper La Nacion began publishing collaborations and chronicles of Dona Emilia (1851-1921) from 1879 and continued until she died in 1921.;Chapter I presents a brief explanation of the chronicles as a genre, the most important events in Dona Emilia's life: her prolific journalism, her feministic economic ideas and the reason why she became a journalist. Difficulties of collecting the originals, problems of titles, subtitles, transcription, and microfilm is noted. I have collected all of her chronicles appearing in La Nacion, none of which are found in her Complete Works, with the exception of number 144. I have divided the collaborations and chronicles into two sections: (1) From 1879 to 1903 I have found twenty-two publications which I call "Colaboraciones Esporadicas" and numbered them with Roman numbers. Some of them had bibliographic problems which have been solved by comparing them with other articles in Spain. Also "Indice I" has been added with Roman numbers. (2) In March 1, 1909 Dona Emilia started as a regular journalist for La Nacion, and concluded July 3rd, 1921, with her last and posthumous article. My research resulted in finding two hundred and sixty chronicles, which I call "Colaboraciones Asiduas" in chapter III. These chronicles contain many topics such as history, politics, sociology, psychology, economics, literature, theatre, fashion, art exhibitions, conferences, feminist ideas, anecdotes of Dona Emilia's life not recorded in her biographies, events of World War I (1914-1918), daily news of her time, that she lived and wrote especially for La Nacion. Noted are the differences that exist between the dates in which these chronicles were written and when they were published, the number of chronicles she wrote yearly and monthly. The fluent style of these chronicles is easy to understand, maintains the reader's interest and is further enhanced by Dona Emilia's polyglot gift and her command of a rich vocabulary, popular proverbs and a range of words that she used to express better her thoughts, such as gallicisms, anglicisms, latinisms and her created neologisms. "Indice II" has been added with Arabic numbers, Bibliographies and a "Conclusion".
