Abstract
-
During the past thirty years Latin American theatre has emerged as one of the most dynamic, activist, and politically committed theatres of modern times. Consequently, theatre researchers around the world have been showing their interest in discovering the wealth of the theatrical and dramatic production in Latin America. As a consequence of massive migration from Latin America to the United States, many practices in the Latin American theatre have been transplanted to this country in order to fulfill the cultural needs of immigrant groups. An example of this phenomenon is clearly seen in the Puerto Rican theatre produced in the United States during the second half of the twentieth century.;Among the many groups that have produced Puerto Rican theatre on the mainland are: The Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, El Nuevo Teatro Pobre de America, Teatro, de Orilla, Jurutungo and Teatro Cuatro. All of these groups have been primarily concerned with the Puerto Rican search for identity and the preservation of the Puerto Rican culture. A group that is presently focusing its work on these same goals from both social and political perspectives is Teatro Pregones. Pregones stands, after the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, as the second oldest established Puerto Rican theatre group in the United States.;This dissertation is a case study which analyses the presence and the work of Teatro Pregones in the United States during the years 1979 to 1993. My goal has been: (a) to trace the history of the group, (b) to offer a detailed analysis of Pregones's plays and productions, (c) to analyze Pregones's contribution as a theatre company to Puerto Rican and Latin American communities in the Bronx and, through touring, across the United States.;The work of this dissertation focuses on the history of some of the company's more than twenty productions including: La coleccion, Areyto de pescadores, High Noon-Al Mediodia, La Caravana, El Abrazo-The Embrace, Migrants! Voices of Steel/Voces de Acero and Medea's Last Rosary, and their continuing successful struggle for survival.;Because of the paucity of published material, this dissertation relies for the most part upon primary materials located in the files of Pregones Theatre, at 700 Grand Concourse Avenue in the Bronx. Their files offer a rich variety of primary sources: general information, original scripts, promptbooks, workshops, publicity material, photos, reviews, videos, programs, and resource materials. I also include in this research interviews with three of the associate directors of Teatro Pregones.
