This dissertation concentrates on the Cuban naturalist novel analyzing social, cultural and aesthetically the works of those authors who were influenced by the naturalist movement. It studies the Cuban novel since Cirilo Villaverde (1830-40) to Carlos Loveira (1927) and including the novels of Ramon Meza, Martin Morua Delgado, Nicolas Heredia, Emilio Bobadilla y Miguel de Carrion.;The purpose behind is to determine the influence of naturalism in Cuban authors who intended to break with the traditional values of the turn of the century Cuban society. It proposes to explain the late appearance of naturalism in the Cuban novel with regard to the rest of Latin America.;The corpus of this dissertation is divided into four chapters.;Chapter one analyzes the origin, and development of naturalism and its impact in Latin America narrative.;Chapter two concentrates on the XIX Century Cuban society as it is illustrated in the novel Cecilia Valdes.;Chapter three studies the novels of Ramon Meza, Martin Morua Delgado and Nicolas Heredia (1886-1901) which express the consequences of Spanish colonialism in the Cuban society.;Chapter four studies the novels of Emilio Bobadilla, Miguel de Carrion y Carlos Loveira (1902-1927). These novels introduce for the first time the naturalist elements in the Cuban narrative.
