Abstract
-
Although Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina (1931-) was acclaimed in this country during the period of perestroika in the late 1980's, she has not received as much attention here in the period following the collapse of the Soviet Union as have some of her compatriots. This lag may be due to her being miscast and inappropriately programmed as a "mystical minimalist" or a Russian nationalist composer.;An effort to correct this situation should begin with a better understanding of Gubaidulina's preoccupations and compositional strategies. After presenting background information about the circumstances that molded her musical personality, this study focuses on a single piece, the String Trio (1988) as a paradigm for examining the details of her technique. Theoretical analysis of formal organization, pitch and rhythmic procedures and use of color and performance modes in each of the three movements yields a complex and detailed view of her technique. Comparing these findings with the practices in three of her other recent pieces confirms the existence of a hallmark or set of strategies not confined to one piece. This method may yield a greater understanding and appreciation of Gubaidulina's other music, even works yet to be written, and enable a more appropriate, frequent and enthusiastic programming and reception of her work.
