My dissertation consists of a study and critical edition of the Libro llamado Relox de principes con el Libro de Marco Aurelio by Antonio de Guevara.;I have relied on the editio princeps published in Valladolid by Nicolas Tierri on April, 8, 1529 as the basic text of my edition, and made use of the Seville edition of 1531, published by Juan Cromberger, and occasionally the 17{dollar}\sp{lcub}\rm th{rcub}{dollar} century edition from the printer Carlos Sanchez, in order to solve textual problems whenever necessary.;In the apparatus criticus, I discuss in detail the reasons for taking the editio princeps as the closest testimony of Guevara's ultimate intentions regarding his text. In my analysis, I conclude that all the additional chapters, changes of titles and textual corrections that appear in the Lisbon edition of September, 13, 1529, and more extensively in the Seville edition, were exclusively the work of the publishers.;Since traditionally there has been a great deal of confusion between the Libro aureo de Marco Aurelio and Relox de principes, I have included a table showing which chapters are shared by the two texts. In addition, I have used smaller type for all the passages from LMA that did not suffer any alteration in the Relox, and italics for those that were rewritten or modified by Guevara; in so doing, I intend to reveal not only the major differences between the two texts, but also Guevara's art of composition.;In the footnotes I have tried to point out, examine, and, at times, resolve all the linguistic, historical, and literary problems involved in the text. Special attention has been given to the literary and historical sources. Since Guevara's use of his classical sources is by and large careless, if not mere sham, I have tried to identify and ascertain the true and the false, and trace the origin of his inventions.;Also, in the introduction I have dealt briefly with the biography of the author as well as with all the most relevant aspects of the book such as its genesis, its different genres, its structure and composition, and the peculiar treatment of some Renaissance literary and political themes and topoi.;Finally, the edition comes with two indexes: one listing all the annotated words and the other listing the historical and fictional names appearing in the text.
