This dissertation, written in Spanish, focuses mainly on Francisco Contreras' (1877-1933) career as literary critic for the French art and literary journal Mercure de France. Contreras was appointed director of the Spanish-American section of this periodical in 1911 and continued in charge until his death in 1933. This annotated edition presents the translation into Spanish of all the chronicles published in French by Contreras during his tenure at the Mercure. It is preceded by an introduction that covers the most important events in his life: the Chilean and French periods, the brief return to Chile, France again, and the later years of Contreras. It also studies the relevance of the Mercure de France and the history of this publication which was founded in 1672, giving particular attention to the "Modern Series" published starting 1860 and its Latin-American (later named Spanish-American) section inaugurated in 1897. The introduction also presents the literary career of Contreras which began with collaborations in literary journals in his native Chile and continued with the publication of various collections of poems, short stories and novels. Also explored is the coinage by Contreras of the term mundonovismo to distinguish his understanding of the evolution of Spanish-American literature as a more autochthonous trend, from modernismo. The analysis of his contributions in the Mercure de France was divided into two units:(1) Themes in the chronicles and (2) Genres and literary schools. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of Contreras' work for the diffusion of Spanish-American literature in Europe through this French journal which unconditionally opened the doors to the then "marginal" literature of Spanish America.
