Abstract
-
This dissertation examines two distinct, yet interrelated phenomena: (a) the experience of applying the United Way as a community model of philanthropy in the Philippines: (b) the role of a sociologist as an agent of change.;This study shows that the United Way has not approximated the success it has achieved in the U.S. and other parts of the world, whichever measure of success is used. The study compares a number of dimensions relevant to both American and Philippine societies, specifically: community resources of wealth, income, grass roots welfare organizations, and other features of local civil society, including notions of culture and moral standards. The analysis includes a comparison of the internal and external environments within which the model developed in the two nations. A historical dimension is added as the development of the two countries' economy and political life is traced, as well as the emergence of voluntarism and the welfare state.;To provide a wider perspective on the organized practice of philanthropy in the Philippines and to illustrate that certain NGOs have achieved greater success within the same external environment, the operations of three other philanthropic organizations were documented: "Tulay sa Pag-Unlad" or TSPI (Bridge for Progress), Philippine Partnership for the Development of Human Resources in Rural Areas (PhilDhrra), and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).;This dissertation also details the experience of the sociologist as an agent of change. At the beginning, the focus of the experience was more on the organizational transformation to be accomplished rather than mere research. The research goal emerged upon the analysis of the action and the resulting change. Further research was subsequently conducted. The outcome is not merely a research report. In addition to an analysis of the findings and the transformational process, an organization was fundamentally changed and revitalized. In addition, a new set of procedures was introduced, which can be helpful for shaping human interaction and for enhancing an innovative, though unconventional role, for social scientists.
