Abstract
This edition updates and revises the scholarship of Das Buch von Troja II, a mid fifteenth-century Bavarian Trojan War romance in prose. Volume One comprises the introduction and the main text of Das Buch as based on Ms.germ.qu. 1145 of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin--Preu{dollar}\beta{dollar}ischer Kulturbesitz, f. 1ra-164vb. Volumes Two and Three contain the lists of variant readings of the remaining six extant manuscripts: Arnoldstein (Carinthia, Austria), Klosterarchiv, Hs. 355, f. 3v; Luneburg, Ratsbucherei der Stadt Luneburg, Ms. Hist. C. 2{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar} 37, f. 1ra-188vb; Milan, Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense, AE XIII. 13, f. 164ra-270rb; Prague, Narodni Knihovna, Cod. I B. 6, f. 227ra-368vb; Vienna, Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek, Cod. 2802, f. 1ra-181vb; and Zeil (bei Leutkirch), Furstlich Waldburg Zeil'sches Gesamtarchiv, ZAMs 21, f. 1ra-153rb. Volume Three also contains the list of proper names and the bibliography.;The introduction traces the classical, late-classical, and medieval traditions of Trojan War literature, with an emphasis on the medieval German tradition, and reveals Das Buch's central place in this tradition. Then the commentary on Das Buch includes (a) the catalogue and description of the seven extant manuscripts; (b) the relationship of these manuscripts based on the variant readings, and the resulting stemma; (c) an examination of the sources of Das Buch, particularly the relationship of Konrad von Wurzburg's Der Trojanische Krieg and Ulrich Fuetrer's Trojanerkrieg to Das Buch, with a focus on the rhymes in these two verse works. A brief discussion of the editorial principles of this edition is also provided.
