Abstract
-
The German philologist Ernst Robert Curtius was one of the first scholars to point out the extreme importance of Baltasar Gracian's Agudeza y arte de ingenio, a treatise on the nature of wit, first published in Spain in 1648. He also emphasized the necessity of both making it accessible to other languages and conducting a close examination of its contents. Ever since, the treatise has been translated into English, French, Italian, and Russian (a partial translation, so far), a phenomenon that parallels the significant increase of studies devoted to Agudeza. A thorough microtextual study, however, had not been attempted so far. Such is the purpose of this dissertation, which consists of (a) an exhaustive examination and clarification of the entire taxonomy of wit as developed by Gracian. (b) an analysis of the mechanisms governing the uses of conceit.;The introduction discusses the history of criticism on Agudeza. The study includes six conceptual maps on the internal organization of the book.
