Abstract
-
Blest Gana's Evocation of history in Durante la Reconquista focuses on a series of events that took place in Chile between 1814 and 1817, a turbulent period which corresponds to the re-establishment of Spanish colonial rule in that country. The events covered are: the Battle of Rancagua (Oct. 1-2, 1814) and the defeat of the Patriot army after a bloody resistance; the persecution of their family members; the senseless assasination of prisoners in a Santiago jail; and the heroic effort of the Chilean people to end the country's foreign occupation. The historical recollection concludes with the defeat of the Royalist Army in the Battle of Chacabuco, and the arrival of San Martin in Santiago on February 2, 1817. Unlike previous studies on Durante la Reconquista, which only sought to establish literary parallels between the novel and the texts of History which provided the materials used be the novelist, Blest Gana's Evocation of History in Durante la Reconquista focuses on the original treatment Blest Gana brings to the topic of Reconquista, and the manner in which he interprets the events that he is recreating. It analyzes the author's fictional treatment of these historical events in light of the material gathered by the chroniclers of the time, and of recent research on Blest Gana's novel. The present study is divided into four chapters. Chapter I deals with the Origins of the novel, Chapter II with its Reconstruction of Historical facts. Chapter III analyzes some Aspects of Chilean Social Reality, and Chapter IV focuses on the People who intervene in this historical period. These chapters are followed by a brief conclusion based on the ideas presented in the course of this study.
