Abstract
Global telecommunication networks are becoming reality as we approach twenty-first century. These networks currently carry information in the form of voice and data. As the usage of computers in the world increases, there is a greater demand for faster, more efficient and sophisticated digital communication networks which transport data, audio, video and other forms of information. These networks differ from the traditional analog networks both in functionality and operation. This thesis identifies the fundamental elements of a network, such as link characteristics, traffic patterns and topology that are crucial to well functioning, efficient and scalable global networks which can handle the demands of the future applications. It also investigates the theoretical foundations for a framework of general guidelines for future designers of global networks.
