Abstract
-
This study examines a competency based assessment technology known as Assessment Centers. Typically utilized by for-profit organizations, the author's purpose is to adapt this technology to the career development needs of human service managers. The exercises, instructions and Assessment Center format are adapted to fit the social work managerial experience. Feedback is the primary method used to measure the effectiveness of the adaptation of the instruments. Feedback is also obtained about the overall assessment experience. Both quantitative and qualitative data is collected and analyzed. The analysis demonstrates the need for a cost effective skills assessment methodology specifically geared to human service managers. Implications for future assessment experiences of this type are reviewed and future research directions are proposed.
