Abstract
-
Social workers in a variety of capacities must identify, diagnose and treat survivors of sexual abuse. Today, many clinicians are becoming more aware that adults who seek treatment have a developmental history that includes both incest and addiction. The association between alcohol and drug abuse and child maltreatment is common in the literature. In addition, adults in treatment who were sexually abused as children frequently describe concurrent parental alcohol and drug abuse as well.;An additional problem for the helping professional, however, is that cases may not manifest themselves as sexual abuse, but rather, as other types of dysfunction, i.e., depression, suicide attempts, drug and alcohol abuse, etc. Yet the professional receives little or no training in sexual abuse; it is a specialty area and requires knowledge beyond that found in most professional schools and training programs.;In response to the lack of training in the addiction field, and to support the literature--which challenges professionals to implement training in the area of sexual abuse--this investigator developed a model training program to respond to the special needs of social workers practicing within the alcohol and drug Service Delivery System of Nassau County.;The two-fold purpose of this study was to gather information about the Sexual Abuse Training Course from workers and their supervisors who participated in this training primarily through a qualitative research approach utilizing a standardized, open-ended interview guide. In addition, some quantitative data of pre-test/post-test results and a written evaluation were also used, so that a formal Sexual Abuse Training Curriculum was developed from the suggestions of the course members, for the addiction field. No information regarding such training existed previously in the literature.
