Abstract
-
This dissertation deals with the representation of Brittany in the works of Balzac. The place Brittany occupies in La Comedie humaine reveals the depth of the interest Balzac had in the region. In the first part, the author examines the roots of Balzac's "breton" fascination and the various literary influences that led to his description of Brittany. In the second part, the geographical aspects of the region are analysed in detail, including landscapes and vegetation. The minimal role given by Balzac to urban and maritime description is also discussed. The last part concentrates on the people of Brittany, their physical appearance and features on the one hand, and on the other hand, the structure of their society. Finally, the deliberate omission by Balzac of the "bourgeoisie" among the "breton" social classes, combined with the quasi-absence of cities in the landscape, is used to pinpoint the contradictions of his political thinking.
