Abstract
-
The principal purpose of this thesis is to study the literary representation given to "race" and racial conflicts in the narrative and theater of the Ecuadorian author Demetrio Aguilera-Malta. He is among the first Latin American writers who, understanding the many abuses suffered by those considered racially inferior gave fictional and dramatic expression throughout their life to the problems and complexities of ethnic relations. A second intention of this work is to demonstrate the great quality of his fiction. Although not fully recognized as such, Aguilera-Malta should be considered among the best writers of the continent during the second half of the XX century.;In this thesis particular relevance is given to this author's biographical data. Although not autobiographical per se, most of the fictional works that Aguilera-Malta produced, in over fifty years of writing, had roots in his intimate life experiences and his personal contact with the "montuvios", the very poor inhabitants of the region in which we was born and raised.;The author's only surviving brother and his two daughters have provided me with a vast amount of previously unpublished works, among them, family letters. Thus, the present study includes the most exhaustive and up-to-date bibliography available of Aguilera-Malta at the present time.;Due to the quantity and quality of this new material at my disposal, the first chapter will be an updated biographical sketch, with particular attention to the life events that influenced his writing. I will also try to correct some erroneous information given in previous works about him. In the remaining chapters I will discuss the genres in which the racial conflict is presented: his short stories, his plays and his novels. Besides these three genres, Aguilera-Malta wrote poetry, historical novels and over two thousand newspapers essays. On three different occasions he served in diplomatic functions, wrote the scripts for and produced three movies and also taught at different universities, in Latin America and in the United States.;Aguilera-Malta's many and varied contributions to Ecuadorian and Latin American culture are the context for the study of the important, always-present ethnic theme in his literary works.
