Abstract
-
This dissertation is the first chronicle of the career of the American experimental director Tom O'Horgan, the most prolific and renowned New York theatre director of the Sixties. His lifework includes over two hundred productions.;At the age of seventy-three, O'Horgan has a schedule of new works and projects that continue unabated, the 1995-96 season alone included six major productions, as well as the formation and debut of his latest troupe, the La Mama 2000 Repertory Company. In celebration of the La Mama Experimental Theatre's thirty-fifth anniversary, he adapted, scored, and directed three new works.;The study examines the sixty-plus years of O'Horgan's theatrical experiences, and the influences on his production styles and professional philosophy. The work traces O'Horgan's rise to alternative theatre eminence, from his early New York and La Mama experiences at home and abroad, to his Off-Broadway acclaim. It looks at O'Horgan's fame at its Broadway peak, and tracks the ensuing years, tracing the legacy his work and plans offer future theatre artists.;Appendices include the few extant written reflections of O'Horgan, and a chronology of his artistry.
