Abstract
-
This study considers the contribution of Betty Carter as a jazz singer, composer and arranger. Drawing upon the available interviews of Betty Carter, it elucidates Carter's own perspective on the events of her life. It views her development as an artist and the significance of her work within the context of the history of jazz, and explores how the changes that occurred in the music industry during the period from 1946-1996 have effected her career. Details about the formation of Carter's record company and other aspects of how she managed her career shed light on the mechanics of getting one's work to the public in the popular music business.;The second part of this dissertation provides a detailed analysis of Carter's musical style, based upon several transcriptions of her singing. Using Jan LaRue's Guidelines for Style Analysis as a foundation for the analysis, it explores those features of Carter's style which she absorbed from her musical milieu in Detroit in the early days of bebop and those that she expanded upon to create the uniquely personal statements for which she is now known. In examining how Carter shapes the elements of Sound, Harmony, Melody, Rhythm, and Growth in conjunction with the lyrics of popular songs, the study raises questions about the creative process of jazz vocalists, and the aesthetics of jazz and jazz singing.
