Abstract
The genus Leptocereus (Berger) Britton and Rose is revised to include 17 species and 3 subspecies arranged in 2 subgenera and 6 sections. Subgenus Leptocereus is exclusively Cuban and comprises 13 species, 5 of which are new, and one new subspecies. Species of subgenus Leptocereus are arranged in 4 sections: sect. Leptocereus with L. assurgens (Wright) Britton and Rose, L. chrysotyrius Areces, L. ekmanii (Werderman) Knuth, L. prostratus Britton and Rose, and L. albellus Areces; sect. Roseiflori (sect. nov) with L. wrightii Leon ssp. wrightii and ssp. gracilis Areces, L. scopulophilus Areces, and L. leonii Britton and Rose; sect. Costanthus ( sect. nov) with L. arboreus Britton and Rose and L. carinatus Areces; and sect. Spinosissimus ( sect. nov) with L. sylvestris Britton and Rose, L. maxonii Britton and Rose, and L. santamarinae Areces. Subgenus Weingartianea Areces (subgen. nov. ) is distinguished on the basis of stem and epidermis anatomy, seed morphology, geographical distribution, and molecular data (trnL intron sequences of chloroplast DNA). It includes 4 species and 2 new subspecies of Hispaniola and/or Puerto Rico. Within subgen, Weingartianea, 2 sections are recognized: sect. Tenuicaulis (sect. nov), including L. weingartianus (Hart.) Britton and Rose ssp. weingartianus and ssp. demissus Areces, and sect. Cephaliphora (sect. nov), represented by L. paniculatus (Lamarck) Hunt, L. quadricostatus (Bello) Britton and Rose ssp. quadricostatus and ssp. parvispinus Areces, and L. grantianus Britton and Rose. A puzzling "leptocereoid" taxon from Haiti is described under Cereus subgenus Hamannia Areces (subgen. nov) as a new species: Cereus (Hamannia) fabiolae Areces. This monograph comprises a complete taxonomic revision of the genus based on the study of herbarium and liquid-preserved material as well as extensive field observations. The introductory chapters present a survey of taxonomic history, general morphology, anatomy, seed morphology, palynology, molecular systematics, cladistic analysis, general ecology, reproductive biology, phytogeography, and conservation biology. The systematic treatment includes keys to the species and subspecies, typification of all names, descriptions of all taxonomic categories, and geographic distributions. This monograph includes 43 tables, 12 black and white figures, and 63 color plates.
