Abstract
-
This dissertation studies the heroic world constructed by the Argentinean poet Leopoldo Lugones (1874--1938). Considering Lugones, epic as poetics, politics and economy of passions, the thesis traces the heroic drive that informs the writer's imaginary in three different levels: (a) Subjective: what is a hero for Lugones? How does his writing design an epic model of subjectivity? (b) Political-ideological: it inscribes the poet evolution toward fascism within the history of this heroic quest. (c) Textual: the work reads Lugones' texts as the history of his epic enterprise.;The thesis defines the war that structures Lugones' symbolic universe as its specific heroic mode of production and follows its dialectical development over three periods of the writer's career. First, it analyzes Lugones' youth (1897--1903) focusing on his socialist political militancy and his apocalyptical conception of social revolution. Second, the dissertation studies Lugones, liberal period (1903--1922) focusing on the synthetic logic that supports the writer's aesthetic construction of the woman as a heroic mother and of the nation as an organic society. Third, it studies Lugones, definition of the Argentinean fatherland as an epic community and investigates the conditions of his evolution toward fascism in 1922. Finally, the thesis explores the heroic meaning of Lugones' suicide in 1938 as a "beautiful epic dead".
