Abstract
The Libro del Caballero Cifar is a medieval Spanish text of the fourteenth century that has come to be studied as a chivalric romance. However, upon examination of Cifar one suspects it not, in fact, to fall within the genre of chivalric romances. This work intends, therefore, to present the hybrid nature of the text, demonstrate its distance from the canon of chivalric romances and analyze it from the standpoint of the Byzantine romance. This work does not seek to deny certain characteristics of the chivalric genre present in Cifar, but instead, to emphasize those parallels which do exist between it and the Byzantine romance.;This work is divided into four chapters. The first examines the status quaestionis of criticism. It is from this that the theoretical framework of Cifar is analyzed.;The second chapter explores the structure of Cifar, with emphasis placed on the prologue.;The third chapter centers on the institution of chivalry and how it became a literary phenomenon. It considers, in addition, those traits most common to the chivalric genre in order to examine whether or not they in fact appear in Cifar.;Finally, the fourth chapter focuses on those aspects characteristic of the Byzantine romance, demonstrating their presence within the text of Cifar. The chapter, furthermore, studies the ways in which the book's author was likely influenced by the Byzantine romance, a literary genre supposedly unknown to Western Europe until the seventeenth century, long after Cifar was written.
