Abstract
-
The establishment of a permanent symphonic orchestra in Montreal went through many ups and downs. Paradoxically, it is during what may be called the toughest decade of the century (1930s) that the most significant efforts were made toward that goal. In fact, the efforts were so great that they resulted in the birth of two organizations that shared the spotlight for seven years. The dissertation looks into the circumstances that led to the formation of both orchestras, their parallel activities, and the reasons why one succeeded while the other failed. Since the linguistic and cultural duality of Montreal played an important role in the development of both organizations, the subject is treated in that aspect. A comparison of the activities, the repertoire, the ethnic makeup of the personnel and administrative board of both orchestras, and the appreciation by the public and the media constitutes the core of the dissertation.
